Hi—thanks for visiting. We are mathematicians working mainly in several complex variables and complex analytic geometry. The objects in our field often involve several complex numbers at once. In real dimensions they quickly outgrow the pictures we can draw on paper or a blackboard, and large parameter families make the situation even harder to hold in one’s head.
So we wondered whether AI-assisted implementation could make VR visualization easy enough to try—and give us one more way to build mathematical intuition.
What do we ask AI to do?AI
Building an interactive VR scene normally requires programming and familiarity with tools for creating 3D graphics. Our aim is to let mathematicians get started without first mastering those tools. We describe the mathematical object, coordinates, parameters and interaction we want. ChatGPT helps create and edit the necessary code and settings files, helps find and fix errors, and explains what each part is intended to compute and display.
In this project, we use AI primarily to implement mathematical visualizations and observation games, rather than to solve open problems, certify proofs or write research papers. Mathematical judgments and decisions about what to adopt and publish remain with the researchers. This describes our use of AI; it is not a judgment on other researchers’ approaches.
Pure mathematicians sometimes use Mathematica to plot a one-parameter family and gain intuition by watching how it changes. AI-assisted VR plays a similar role for us: it expands the range of pictures we can ask for and compare. We do not, however, treat a generated plot by itself as a proof or as sufficient grounds for an established mathematical claim.
How do we use visualization in our mathematical work?
We want to look at mathematical objects from different viewpoints and vary their parameters, extending our intuition for structures that are hard to grasp on paper or a blackboard alone. When a picture suggests an idea, we compare it with the mathematics we know and use it to decide what to explore next.
If something in the display seems wrong, we ask Chapio-kun what was calculated and how it was drawn, and ask for corrections or tests where needed. Rather than making the ability to read every line of the program a starting requirement, we use observation and discussion to develop a tool for thinking about mathematics.
Why share the setup?
We began with little VR-development experience. That is precisely why the path from purchasing the machine to seeing the first mathematical object matters. We record the hardware, the software, the points where we hesitated, and the criteria we used to decide that a step had worked.
At present, we do not distribute source code or executable builds of the VR applications. We share the setup and mathematical design so that another mathematician can build a similar environment independently and adapt the workflow to a different subject.
Our examples reflect our work in several complex variables and complex analytic geometry, but we hope the setup guide will also help mathematicians in other areas of pure mathematics try similar ideas with their own objects.
We also publish three browser games for practising how to observe mathematical objects. Kyoka Marui, Masakazu Takakura, Ryo Uchimoto and Takayuki Koike discussed the aims and methods of 3D VR observation for building intuition in complex analytic geometry. These discussions led us to conceive and jointly develop games as an enjoyable way to practise connecting what we see with mathematical understanding. We asked Chapio-kun (ChatGPT) to write the code. They can be played on this site without a VR headset.
