What have we tried to see?

Here we share 3D VR visualizations and browser games for practising how to observe mathematical objects, developed through dialogue with AI. We describe the mathematics and the views we want in words and formulas, then discuss and refine what appears on screen. Our setup guide explains how to prepare the VR environment.

The examples build on known mathematics and visualization ideas. We are sharing how mathematicians can try such views for themselves, not proposing new theorems or new 3D VR rendering algorithms. The individual pages and related work point to the earlier work that informed this exploration.

Kyoka Marui, Masakazu Takakura, Ryo Uchimoto and Takayuki Koike discussed what to observe in 3D VR, how to observe it and what we hoped to understand, with the aim of developing intuition in complex analytic geometry. These discussions led to the idea of games as an enjoyable way to practise connecting what we see with mathematical understanding.

The four of us jointly developed these three browser games from this shared concept. Move graphs and slices, predict their properties, then compare your impression with the mathematical explanation. You can play in your browser without a VR headset.

Subharmonic?

Lift a circle onto a function graph and compare it with the center. Predict subharmonicity, then explore the mathematical explanation.

Plurisubharmonic?

Switch the roles of two complex planes to inspect coordinate slices. Explore oblique complex discs to investigate plurisubharmonicity.

Pseudoconvex?

Move a point in one complex plane and follow the domain’s slice in the other. A pseudoconvexity game inspired by Kiyoshi Oka’s ryokuinzu.
